The Beacon Question™
What financial concerns are people talking about in your family, workplace or community?
THE BEACON INITIATIVE™
The Beacon Initiative™ was created as TWMC’s long-term commitment to listening to the financial concerns of families, seniors, business owners, caregivers, community organizations and the professionals who serve them.
Before developing educational resources or community initiatives, we believe it is important to first understand the questions people are asking and the challenges they are facing.
Too often, financial conversations begin with recommendations. We believe they should begin with conversation.
Through Beacon Conversations, TWMC meets with community leaders, trusted professionals, charitable organizations, faith communities, healthcare providers, educators and local organizations to learn about the financial issues affecting the people they serve. Those conversations help identify common concerns, recognize emerging needs and shape educational resources that are relevant, practical and meaningful.
The knowledge gained through these conversations becomes a foundation for future Beacon Articles, community presentations, planning guides, workshops and educational initiatives. The goal is not simply to share information, but to provide education that reflects real experiences in the communities TWMC serves.
The best financial guidance begins with listening.
WHY WE LISTEN FIRST
Listening is more than the first step in the process — it is the foundation of meaningful planning. Before discussing investments, insurance, retirement or estate matters, good planning begins by understanding a person’s life, goals, concerns, values and the transitions they may be experiencing.
TWMC describes this philosophy with a simple principle:
Diagnose Before You Prescribe™
Just as a physician would not recommend treatment before understanding a patient’s condition, financial guidance should begin with discovery rather than assumptions. The same philosophy extends beyond individual planning conversations. The Beacon Initiative™ applies it to communities by listening to families, caregivers, business owners, educators, healthcare professionals, charitable organizations, faith communities and other community leaders.
When we listen first, education becomes more relevant. Planning becomes more meaningful. And communities become better informed.
BEACON CONVERSATIONS
Every Beacon Conversation begins with a simple question:
What financial concerns are people talking about in your family, workplace or community?
Beacon Conversations are informal discussions with people and organizations that have a unique perspective on the financial challenges facing Canadians. Their purpose is to listen, learn and better understand the questions people are asking as they navigate life’s transitions.
There is no product presentation and no expectation beyond a genuine conversation. The discussions help TWMC identify emerging concerns, recognize gaps in financial understanding and discover opportunities where education may make a meaningful difference.
Every conversation contributes to a broader understanding of the community and helps educational resources address real needs rather than assumptions.
Who Might Participate?
BULLET LIST

- Faith communities
- Healthcare organizations, caregivers and support organizations

THE BEACON COMMUNITY REPORT
Every Beacon Conversation contributes to a larger picture. As common themes emerge, the Beacon Community Report brings those insights together.
The report is intended to summarize common financial concerns, emerging themes and educational opportunities identified through Beacon Conversations. It is not intended to identify individuals or disclose confidential conversations. Its purpose is to help guide future articles, presentations, planning resources, workshops and community education initiatives.
In this way, a question raised in one conversation may eventually help inform an educational resource that benefits many others.
Listening First. Learning Continuously. Sharing Knowledge.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
Strong communities are built through strong relationships. The Beacon Initiative™ is founded on the belief that no single organization has all the answers. Valuable insights often come from the people and organizations serving communities every day.
These relationships are not about promoting products or services. They are about listening, learning and sharing knowledge that can help people make more informed financial decisions throughout life’s transitions.
EDUCATION IN ACTION
Listening is only the beginning. Education is where understanding becomes action.
As common themes emerge through Beacon Conversations and the Beacon Community Report, TWMC can develop educational resources designed to address those real-world questions. These may include:
- Beacon Articles published through the Beacon Knowledge Centre and TWMC communications
- Community presentations and Lunch & Learn programs
- Practical planning guides and downloadable resources
- Educational workshops for community organizations
- Financial-planning tools and checklists
- Resources that encourage informed conversations between families and appropriate professionals
The objective is not simply to provide information. It is to help people better understand their options, recognize questions worth asking and prepare for more informed conversations and decisions.
Education cannot prevent every challenge life brings. It can, however, help people prepare more thoughtfully, respond with greater clarity and navigate change with better information.
Because informed decisions can help build stronger families, stronger organizations and stronger communities.
HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE
The Beacon Initiative™ is built on conversation, collaboration and community involvement. Individuals, organizations and community leaders can contribute by sharing the questions and concerns they are hearing and by helping identify areas where financial education may be useful.
- Share financial questions and concerns you hear within your family, workplace or community.
- Suggest topics for future Beacon Articles, planning guides, presentations or workshops.
- Invite TWMC to participate in an educational conversation with your organization or community group.
- Participate in a Beacon Conversation to help identify financial challenges affecting the people you serve.
- Share Beacon educational resources with others who may find them useful.
Every conversation contributes to a broader understanding of the community and helps shape future educational initiatives.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Beacon Initiative™ is not a single project. It is a long-term commitment to listening, learning and serving communities through education.
As financial questions emerge and life continues to change, the conversations, partnerships, articles, presentations and educational resources developed through the initiative can evolve as well. The aim is to build a growing library of practical information that helps Canadians navigate life’s transitions with greater understanding.
Stronger communities begin with informed conversations. By listening first and leading through education, TWMC hopes to contribute to a future where more Canadians have access to practical financial knowledge and thoughtful planning education.
While life’s transitions may change our direction, they don’t have to determine our destination.
